Ray and Charles Eames were American designers. They produced a lot of work over various different fields, such as architecture, furniture design, exhibition design and film.
One of the most well known pieces of work is the Eames lounge chair, which possesses some of the key features synonymous with Eames design, such as moulded plywood and compound curves.
Charles Eames briefly studied architecture but left the university because his views were "too modern". He later became a teacher of the industrial design department at the Cranbrook Academy of Art which is where he met his wife Ray.
Ray studied abstract expressionist painting, and was a founder of the American Abstract Artists group. This interest in abstract expressionist painting can be seen in the covers that she designed for the Arts and Architecture journal.
Ray and Charles Eames' design process was very collaborative, and they produced a lot of work spanning a variety of media together. As part of an architecture magazine's program they designed and built their own house (Case Study House 8) and it is considered a classic of modern residential architecture.
I think with these people of note there would be a lot of fun imagery to explore for this project. For example, the Eames house has a mondrianesque feel to it with the strong block primary colours and rectangles and this could transfer well to the stamps, postcards and poster. I also think that because their work spans so much different media and its all very visual it would be a fun one to explore. So far, I prefer this to John Cage.
